The Sweet Auburn Curb Market has a rich history as the city of Atlanta’s first and oldest municipal farmer’s market. When we were approach to create a vision study for the future of the market, it had fallen into disrepair. We see great potential for the market to become a major cultural landmark for the city but, in order to do so, it must overcome such challenges as visual access, connectivity, and interior circulation.
Our vision study proposes to preserve and restore the historic façade while adding contemporary design elements. One of these elements, and the focal point of the exterior, is a curved steel and glass canopy on the North façade. This canopy serves as a functional awning, encouraging pedestrian congregation and outdoor seating, and also lends a dramatic contemporary architectural element to an otherwise traditional building.
The comprehensive masterplan for this project includes a sustainable roof structure, a dynamic interior space renovation and strategies for future growth. The final outcome creates an iconic mixed-use destination while increasing market accessibility to Atlanta’s inner-city residents.
